These locomotives will play a crucial role in helping Indian Railways achieve its goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2030
Challenges
In a transformative partnership with Siemens Mobility and Indian Railways, Pyrotek has engineered a specialised flooring system for the first 60 of 1,200 WAG10 9000 HP Co-Co Locomotives. Designed for heavy freight transportation, these cutting-edge locomotives can haul up to 4,500 tonnes at speeds of 120 km/h, modernising track infrastructure, enhancing safety and operational speed. As one of the few nations with an almost fully electrified rail network, India is advancing toward its ambitious goal of net-zero CO₂ emissions by 2030 - an objective, in which these locomotives will play a pivotal role.

Solutions
Siemens Mobility designed, manufactured, and commissioned the locomotives, incorporating Pyrotek’s specialised flooring system, engineered for exceptional strength and dimensional stability. Manufactured in-house by Pyrotek India, the flooring combines durable plywood with premium vinyl, bonded and cut to Siemens’ unique specifications.
Pyrotek’s commitment to engineering excellence ensures that our products meet the highest global rail standards for safety, durability, and performance. Our specialised flooring system underwent extensive R&D and rigorous testing to certify HL3 compliance under EN 45545 fire safety standards, delivering superior fire resistance for railway applications. Additionally, certified third-party acoustical testing confirmed the system’s ability to meet stringent noise and vibration control requirements, enhancing both operational efficiency and onboard comfort.
Beyond performance, Pyrotek upholds the highest sustainability and quality benchmarks. Our manufacturing processes successfully passed both an External Sustainability Audit (ESA) and a VDA 6.3 audit, reinforcing our dedication to environmentally responsible and precision-driven production.
To further strengthen our expertise in advanced bonding techniques, critical to flooring system integrity in high-performance rail applications and as part of Siemens’ supplier requirements, two Pyrotek team members earned European Adhesive Bonder certification through the European Welding Federation (EWF).
Bringing this innovation to life required the expertise and collaboration of key Pyrotek specialists, including Yogendrasingh Pawar, Key Account Manager for Siemens; Laxmikant Chaudhari, Design Engineer; and Santosh Kunde, Production Manager. Their technical acumen and dedication were instrumental in delivering a flooring solution that meets the evolving demands of modern rail transport.

Results
Through this collaboration, Siemens, Indian Railways, and Pyrotek are leading a new era of sustainable, cost-effective, and future-ready rail transport. We take pride in supporting India’s vision of a carbon-neutral, electrified rail network. The project's first inspection was successfully completed in July 2024, with the first dispatch followed in August 2024.
These new locomotives are set to significantly boost freight transport capacity across one of the world’s largest rail networks, replacing an estimated 500,000 to 800,000 trucks over their lifetime. By advancing India’s green rail initiatives, they are projected to save more than 800 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions over their operational life. Pyrotek is honoured to contribute to innovation and sustainability, shaping a greener future for rail transport.
