A new era of electric transportation and sustainability

These locomotives will play a crucial role in helping Indian Railways achieve its goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2030

Challenges

In a transformative partnership with Siemens Mobility and Indian Railways, Pyrotek has engineered a specialised flooring system for the first 60 out of a further 1,200 WAG10 9000 HP Co-Co Locomotives. These state-of-the-art locomotives, developed for freight transportation, are designed to haul up to 4,500 tonnes at speeds of 120 km/h, modernising track infrastructure, enhancing safety, and improving operational speed. India is one of the few countries in the world with a rail network system that is almost fully electric, these locomotives will play a crucial role in helping Indian Railways achieve its goal to reach net-zero CO₂ emissions by 2030.

Solutions

Siemens Mobility designed, manufactured, and commissioned these locomotives, incorporating Pyrotek’s specialised flooring system - engineered for strength and dimensional stability. Manufactured in-house by Pyrotek India, it features durable plywood finished with high-quality vinyl from Mondo, Luxembourg, bonded and cut to Siemens’ unique specifications.

To ensure the highest standards, Pyrotek conducted rigorous R&D testing, including EN 45545 fire safety and acoustical testing through certified third-party laboratories, to meet the stringent requirements of railway applications. Alongside these tests, Pyrotek successfully completed both an External Sustainability Audit (ESA) and a VDA 6.3 audit, demonstrating alignment with strict sustainability and quality standards. Additionally, two Pyrotek team members achieved European Adhesive Bonder certification through the European Welding Federation (EWF), reflecting our commitment to industry-leading practices in bonding and product quality.

Key contributors to this transformative project include Yogendrasingh Pawar, Key Account Manager for Siemens, our design engineer Laxmikant Chaudhari and ourproduction manager Santosh Kunde - whose expertise and dedication were instrumental in bringing this innovative flooring system to life.

Results

Through this collaboration, Siemens, Indian Railways, and Pyrotek are leading a new era of sustainable, cost-effective, and future-ready rail transport. We are proud to support the vision of a carbon-neutral, electrified rail network in India. The project’s first inspection was successfully completed in July 2024, with the first dispatch completed August 2024.

These new locomotives are set to significantly boost freight transport capacity on one of the world’s largest rail networks, replacing an estimated 500,000 to 800,000 trucks over their lifetime. By advancing India’s green rail ambitions, they are projected to save more than 800 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions over their operational life. Pyrotek is honoured to partner with Siemens Mobility and Indian Railways to drive innovation and sustainability for a better future.
