Furthering the vision of handcrafted luxury motor yachts with Pyrotek’s multi-faceted solution
The challenges
Through a long history with Australia’s leading luxury boat builders, Pyrotek was highly sought after to develop an acoustic solution to address high-level noise transfer, experienced in the master cabin, on the lower deck of the 78-foot Motor Yacht. The aim of luxury vessels is to create a retreat for the owner to establish memorable experiences. Effectively addressing noise and vibrations, plays an enormous role in our client’s vision of building luxury yachts handcrafted and admired for quality, superior products, and structural integrity.
The solutions
Pyrotek developed a floating wall system, to reduce noise transfer, after using a noise and vibration software to predict the transmission loss between the master and adjoining cabins.
Decidamp SP150, a water based viscoelastic vibration damping compound, was sprayed to the bulkhead to minimise the vibration energy resonating as airborne noise. Decidamp DC30 is a two-component polyurethane based damping paste, which was applied to a metal counter-plate and bonded to the deckhead for effective constrained layer damping.
Sylomer (a special PUR Elastomer) was installed to isolate the vibrations travelling between the bulkhead structure and Subdue plywood panels. Subdue is constructed from two outer layers of marine grade hardwood, with an inner damped viscoelastic core. The incorporation of Sylomer and thin lightweight Subdue panels was used to maximise cabin volume, while providing excellent noise transmission loss and reducing the airborne noise transfer into the master cabin.
The results
Extensive acoustic testing, to assess the performance of the new system, was undertaken by the project manager, supervisor and Pyrotek, to reveal an outstanding acoustic performance improvement.
The new optimum solution created by Pyrotek alleviated the airborne noise transfer. This was tested using varying volumes of speech and wireless music entertainment. In addition, the sound generated in the master cabin, from walking up/down the staircase, was reduced. Pyrotek was able to successfully meet the demands of luxury comfort for the owners and boat builders.
