Gold Coast light rail bridge uses Reapor

The challenges

Stage one of the light rail runs from the Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH) to Broadbeach south. Fast, frequent trams connect 16 light rail stations along a 13 kilometre route. The system commenced in July 2014 and has since carried over 21,000 passengers per day, and made 21 million trips in just the first three years. As part of the City transport strategy of 2031 further extensions of the line will include a number of stations from various beaches to Burleigh Heads.    

With the construction of the light rail system a new pedestrian and cyclist bridge across the Nerang River was built to improve the non-vehicle access across the river. Addressing noise from this point is important for local neighbouring dwellings/businesses along the waterways as noise can travel easily in these areas.

The solutions

With close proximity to residential buildings (some home to prominent public figures), the G:Link required adequate consideration for smooth, quieter operations across a number of areas including bridges and an overhead viaduct.

New transport infrastructure incorporates many facets of design and construction. Surface materials specified for varying purposes can provide the right finish, durability or acoustic performance. Reapor was selected for all of these reasons. It was selected for inclusion near to the tracks below street level to absorb across a broad frequency range generated by wheel and track contact. Being close to the source, Reapor reduces noise where it occurs and prevents high levels of noise travelling via bridges across waterways and in this case, across the major bridge across the Nerang River. Two other smaller bridges across waterways between Surfers Paradise and Main Beach were treated to prevent uncomfortable noise levels throughout the city.

The results

With the aim of making the area safer, and quieter for people to live, work and travel within the light rail corridor, Reapor helps minimise undue noise along the way. The application on the bridge helped absorb noise with a 2-3 dB reduction resulting in quieter transit and less impact for nearby residents.

Overall, the light rail development contributes towards a better atmosphere for events, local festivals and convenient street conditions in the iconic entertainment precinct. Despite moving thousands of people per hour, the cityscape is minimally impacted by noisy carriages. Complimentary to other local major developments this infrastructure project will continue to improve accessibility and attractiveness of the local public spaces.
